Subject: [PSWG-all] FW: Howard Somers Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 05:18:09 -0800 Howard Edward Somers, 86, one of the early pioneers in the now flourishing WA State wine industry, died Saturday, January 15 at his home in Poulsbo. Howard became involved with his father's winery as a partner and winemaker at the Saint Charles Winery at Grapeview. It was the first bonded winery in the state. He had retired as a commander in the Navy Reserves. After his father's death and subsequent sale of the winery, he became oenologist for the Seattle's one-time National Wine Growers and later Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville. He was instrumental in the development of that winery's Johannesburg Riesling. Aside from being a charter member and former secretary of the Washington Wine Grower's Association and charter member of the American Society of Oenologists, he was also an enthusiastic founding member of the Knights of the Vine. He was also president of the chamber of commerce on Mercer Island. A memorial service and reception will be held at 2 P.M. Friday January 21, at Grace Episcopal Church on Bainbridge Island.
