For an HTML version, please click http://www.hinzerling.com/newsletter2.htm Hinzerling Winery www.Hinzerling.com 1-800-727-6702 Summer-2001 The Vintner's Inn- After what seems like an eternity, and several suitcases full of money, we opened the restaurant on Saturday Aug, 4. We plan to take baby steps with this venture, and do it right.Consequently, for the near term, we will be serving prixe fixe, single menu dinners, each Friday and Saturday with reservation only boarding house style, seating at 7 p.m.. In the next few weeks, we will open up a wine bar on Fridays and Saturdays from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. featuring light hors d'oeuvres, local wines, and microbrews The B & B portion will open as soon as we get some beds that will fit up the stairs. Call us for info or reservations at 800-727-6702 or see www.hinzerling.com. Anniversary Celebration - Yes, we've been at this for 25 years, and we're going to celebrate that milestone with a special 25th Anniversary Library Tasting and Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 8 beginning at 6:30 p.m. We'll break into a passel of bottles from the 70's, 80's, and 90's and pull corks on those lovely old gems for tasting with some great hors d'oeuvres. Following this, we'll fire up the BBQ and have something very decadent, with of course, entirely appropriate wines. I personally guarantee you will find great delight and amazement in the food and wine you'll consume that night or double your palate back. If this is of interest to you, please fill out the reservation form later in this newsletter or call us with the requisite information. Attendance is limited, so don't delay Our Fall Cigar Dinner - my personal homage to decadence and politically incorrect and generally corrupt behavior will be Saturday, Sept 18. We'll light the smoking lamp at 6 p. m.. and start off with a small gauge primo puro and maybe a little sherry and tapas. We'll then extinguish the lamp and get into a cholesterol enhancing meal complete with appropriate libations. We'll gear down with a salad course, followed by a cheese and port course, and of course, a big fat stogy and some lively conversation to go with it all. I guarantee that you will never be able to find a better way to fritter away an Indian Summer evening. If this is of interest, please call me at 1-800-727-6702 or fill out the reservation form later in this newsletter. Harvest Party- our annual romp among the vines and your chance to live the glamorous life of a grape picker for just one day, will be Saturday, Oct. 6. What happens at a harvest party? It's a day in the vineyard picking grapes, eating a sumptuous lunch with some really good matching wines, crushing back at the winery and communing with nature and some like minded folks. You'll take home some great memories, a stiff muscle or two. I guarantee, you'll never look at a glass of wine quite the same way again. If this sounds like fun, then Mark Twain was right, and you need to fill out the reservation form later in this newsletter or call us with the requisite information. We'll provide you with details later.. Serous Sippers Summer Sale- some just released and re-released wines for your consideration: Light Cream Sherry- We released this luscious sipping wine a few weeks ago and have had a very good reception- with a nut and fruit aroma and a decidedly sweet but not cloying finish that makes it the perfect after dinner sipping Try it with some cheese cake or even apple pie. Also great for cooking, I use it to deglaze my pan after sauteing, making it the basis for a complex sauce. Lemberger Port- normally Lemberger port goes into one of my port blending soleras -Ruby or Tawny- as a way to add a spice note to the flavor and aroma. But this blend of two vintages had an intriguing charm that made me decide to bottle it on its own- somewhat lighter than my other ports, I think of this as a port for summer and early fall- with maybe a little sharp cheddar cheese and some fruit on the patio 1999 Semillon- I'm going to confess that I make Semillon for myself. I really like this variety. A rich aroma of melons, peaches, and spice backed up by a crisp acidity, this variety is a real sleeper in terms of press space and consumer recognition- it goes great with many seafoods-especially mussels- and did you know this baby will age well too? Silver Anniversary Red- we decided to pull some old bottles from our library and after tasting, some more tasting, some trial blending and much thought, came up with this exceedingly full bodied, rich, and complex- not to mention tasty red wine blend of Cabernets and Merlots from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. We only made (continued 16 cases of this wine and when it's gone, it's gone- I personally guarantee that this wine will be one of the most delicious Washington red wines you will ever taste. No Cap Gewurz- most of our regular customers will remember when we released some of this wine a year or so ago. What's the story? Well, a small percentage of this wine went kinda funny in the bottle. It became a little hazy and slightly spritzy. Still tastes great, with lots of spice and body- in fact, it may be better than the regular lot was Anyway, what I did was sold it with a label, but no foil cap. I've been holding some to pour by the glass at the Vintner's Inn , but have more that I can use, so, if you like Gewurztraminer, this wine's for you - take a look at the deal below 1990 Merlot - while doing spring inventory, we found a lot of this wine that had been marked as something else. I thought this wine was gone long, but here it is and it ain't too shabby. Now let me tell you, this ain't no off-the-supermarket-shelf Merlot, but it does have a lot of stuff left with a nice plum jam and vanilla nose followed up by a very nice bottle bouquet richness- perfect for that late summer BBQ. The color is moving into a brick red, but what would you expect from a 10 year old Merlot? We've been sampling this in the cellar and it's been moving right out the door. Don't wait too long if a bottle or two of a nicely aged red are of any interest to you. 1983 Cabernet- in honor of our 25th we're releasing a little more of this great year at a real bargain price - full of blackberries, coffee, vanilla and licorice, this wine demands heavy duty red meat-my personal preference is lamb, but you could go with beef or buffalo. Still a bright purple sith a nice tart background, I defy you: to bring me a Washington red that's this old and has as much to it as this gem of a wine does- If you can, I'll give you a free empty case.
